Olmo's Reward

Mike Bennie The Wine Front
"Seductive aromas of blue fruits, mulberry, smoke, olive and blue flowers/lavender. Supple, slippery, layered yet fine texture, mouth coating but given finite frame by fresh acidity, gossamer thread tannins and superb length of sweet and savoury spice. Very sexy wine; finishes with the gradually building grip of fruit tannin and leaving a fresh, mouth-watering close. This is superb. So elegant, such fine feel. "

The West Australian Wine Guide - Ray Jordan
"A blend of cabernet franc, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and malbec. This is one of the best examples of this outstanding blend I have tasted. Combines power and intensity with a silky, almost velvety smooth palate. Its so finely woven together with excellent fine tannin, fine grained oak and deliciously supple appealing fruit. Shows great wines don't have to be big wines."

Jeremy Oliver's The Australian Wine Annual
"Dusty, elegant and complete, this measured, long-term red blend has a heady floral bouquet of ripe black and red berries, fresh, newish cedary oak, mint and dried herbs with a hint of spice. It's supple and fine-grained, with a faintly sour-edged presence of small black, blue and red berries, dark plums and tightly knit oak framed by fine, cultivated and drying tannin. It finishes with great length with dusty, savoury aspects and a hint of dried herbs."

"Mulberry and purple fruit, florals, gentle spicy clove and smokey oak, licorice, twigs. Medium bodied, very supple and fine with a fresh and clean feeling along with stretching tannin that renders it light and dynamic, yet fleshy and flavoursome too. Framed and composed. Some gum leaf and twigginess doesn't spoil this lovely wine, though that depends on your tolerance to these characters, of course. Really enjoy its individuality."

James Halliday Australian Wine Companion
"An estate-grown blend of cabernet franc (70%), merlot (13%), malbec (10%) and cabernet sauvignon (7%). The bright crimson colour is an inviting start to a wine with a range of small red and black fruits, plus notes of tobacco, spice and earth, oak playing a restricted role; the tannins support is particularly good, giving the wine distinction."

"Cabernet franc is the dominant variety here with support from merlot, malbec and just a little cabernet sauvignon. An unusual Australian blend which is deceptively robust and powerful with ripe and assertive tannins striking through the supple fruit flavours. It is a wine with tremendous structure but nothing is obvious and will continue to evolve over the coming years."

Jeremy Oliver - The Australian WIne Annual
"A distinctive, elegant and very convincing blend of right bank red varieties whose dusty perfume of fresh dark flowers, small red and black berries, cedar/vanilla oak and suggestions of red cherries, dried herbs and turned earth precedes a cultivated, supple and almost sappy, long and silky palate. Bursting with pristine small berry and cherry fruits, tightly integrated with fine-grained oak and delivering a vibrant, lingering core of fruit, its framed by finely crafted tannins and punctuated by fresh acids."

Dr Craig Drummond - On the Grapevine
"It shows the fragrance of Cab Franc on the nose, with violets and sweet fruit. The palate is wonderfully textured, supple, velvety, showing delicate flavours of dark plum and clove and indeed is very easy to drink. Again, a long term cellaring wine."

"Frankland Estate produces some of my favourite Rieslings, particularly from the Isolation Ridge & Poison Hill vineyards. For those who do not join me in my Riesling fanaticism, do not despair for the Smith Cullam family also produce some very drinkable reds too. The blend for 2009 is 62% fragrant Cabernet Franc, 17% Merlot, 16% Malbec & Cabernet Sauvignon 5% all from the organic Isolation Ridge Vineyards. Wafts of cinnamon, chocolate, savoury earth, perfumed with some cherry & cedar lift out of the glass to greet you. Elegantly mediumed bodied, it is silky smooth with soft fruit and some fine tannins. A wine of poise & texture that is a fine dinner companion today but I would also keep a few languishing in the cellar. "

"Smoke, tobacco leaf, grey earth; savoury with a lifted floral note. Red and black fruits. Stern aromas, but showing sophistication in complexity. Fleshy feel to texture here, bound by softly chewy tannins and a touch of savoury grit. Mouth puckering to close, has a fine silty feel that becomes the deep blue and black fruits and floral characters. Lots of flavour, herbal complexity. Lunchtime Claret kind of feel, but more class. "

James Halliday - Australian Wine Companion
"Deep in colour, and serious in intent, the bouquet of this wine is all dark fruits, savoury complexity and some seriously good oak; the texture of the wine is remarkable, showing less of the overt minerality of the other wines, and more silk; fine-grained tannins are the key, ensuring the wine is long-lived and long on the palate; built for those who enjoy structure with their fruit. "This was a ring-in and served as a stand-alone, it is mostly cabernet franc and merlot, I believe. Pencils, blueberries, violets. Beautiful aromas. Put it in your mouth and notice immediately how dry it is. Lovely fine tannin and, leading from there, lovely length. Needs time to open and mellow. Impressive wine. Crisp, linear, focussed style. "

Ray Jordan WA Wine Guide
"A blend of merlot and cabernet in largely equal amounts and about nine per cent malbec. Combines power and stylish elegance in a super example of high class Great Southern red wine. The nose is already complex with a savoury fruity spicy mix held with some serious oak, while the palate is cashmere-smooth and very long. Has the framework and depth of fruit to cellar for some years."

"Yeah! Hurrah for Right Bank Blends. This is Cabernet Franc 62%, Merlot 17%, Malbec 16% with Cabernet Sauvignon the rest %. It needs some time to unfurl but when it does its the texture and the fine grained, yet grunty, powdery tannin that gets you in. On offer is a mix of black fruit with flecks of fresh redcurrant, mint and leafy Franc flavours along with some distinguished chocolaty oak. Pretty and serious, only medium weight, but long and impressively structured. A fascinating wine made from a few of my favourite things. "

Wine Business Monthly - Wine 100 Nick Stock
"Plenty of cassis, some florals and a subtle background of stylish oak. The palate has abundant cassis and blue fruit flavours and a sturdy fine tannin structure that will carry this wine for many years yet. Neatly balanced, a real delight."

Stephen Tanzer - International Wine Cellar
"Deep, glass-staining ruby. Subdued but vibrant aromas of blackcurrant, licorice, mint and bitter chocolate. Suave, silky and focused, with lovely finesse and a penetrating quality to the smoky flavors of dark fruit preserves and candied flowers. Very complex, subtle wine with excellent definition and purity, becoming weightier with air. Finishes with sexy floral perfume and lingering smokiness. This should age gracefully ; I'd like to revisit it in three or four years. (46% merlot, 45% cabernet franc and 9% malbec) "

Ray Jordan - Guide to Wine 2008
"This is a wine that's all about complexity and palate. Aromas of dried fruits, blackcurrant and savoury plum with a dusting of dry earth. The palate is still very tight through the middle, but around it the warm plush flesh is substantial. There's a mineral edge on the finish in what is a slightly atypical Australian style."

Spice Winter 2008
"An interesting proportion of varieties; oozing French pizzazz with a touch of Old World in a New World line-up. Spicy based and restrained red fruits like currants, and blackberries. Multifaceted, it's supple, subtle at times and a bit shy. A little lean in the middle but finishes with enough length and finesse. Texturally, it speaks louder by being softer. One of undying pedigree. French.."

Jay Miller - Robert Parker "Wine Advocate" # 181 magazine
"The dark ruby-colored 2003 Olmo's Reward, a blend of 59% Cabernet Franc, 16% Merlot, 14% Malbec, and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose reveals fresh herbs, earth notes, mineral, clove, cinnamon, and red currants. Supple with ripe underlying tannin, the wine has a Saint-Emilion-like personality as well as several years of aging potential. Drink it from 2011 to 2021."

Ray Jordan - Guide to Wine 2005/06
"This is a wine where the aim is to push the envelope a little and get the most out of the mix of fruit. I like this wine a lot. Complex and beautifully balanced. There is power but it's delivered with finesse. Will continue to improve."

2002 Olmo's Reward
Robert Parker "The Wine Advocate"
"The Cheval Blanc of Australia may be Frankland Estate's Olmo's Reward. The 2002 is a Bordeaux-like blend of 49% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon. It reveals remarkable finesse and elegance along with a beautiful nose of menthol, blueberries, raspberries, crushed rocks, and flowers. Dense and rich, with an intensity and power that build incrementally, this is an impressive, exceptionally elegant, French-styled red to consume over the next decade. "

2001 Olmo's Reward
Robert Parker - "The Wine Advocate"
"My favorite of the current releases here is the 2001 Olmo's Reward, a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot that tastes like a New World St.-Emilion. An earthy, cedary perfume of licorice, black currants, fruitcake, and herbs emerges from this full-bodied, superbly concentrated, beautifully pure and balanced wine. Remarkably complex and elegant for such a young wine, it should drink well for a decade."

Invinity Magazine
"This right bank Bordeaux blend which contains 48% merlot and 43% cabernet franc, along with tiny components of the other three major Bordeaux varieties, is sophisticated and elegant - something we don't expect to see from the warmth of WA. Although it has a silky and sophisticated savoury complexity and superb balance, quality, length and a superb finish and after taste, it is of a lighter style and is ...elegant and gracious. It almost has ethereal overtones in the flavours that waft above the nose and palate and in contrast to many of Western Australia's best-known wines, this is sensational now. Suburb early drinking."

"Mocha, red fruits, Xmas cake spice, earthy. Black olives, soy sauce. Very mellow, supple, still has bones of fresh fruit, light tannin profile, whip of acidity. Fine, fresh, flicking of spice. Mature and composed. Delicious wine of great mature character. "
