Isolation Ridge Vineyard Syrah 2018

Isolation Ridge Vineyard Syrah 2018

Gary Walsh, www.thewinefront.com.au, April 2020  Oooh la de da. It’s now a Syrah. Perfumed and peppery, dark cherry and blackcurrant, jasmine and a little apricot. It’s medium bodied, sweetly fruited and fragrant, but savoury and packed with stony tannin, cool acidity and fresh juicy raspberry length. It’s a very impressive wine, with perhaps a bit more to come. Drink 2021 - 2030+ 94+ pts

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Perfumed with hints of spice and white pepper, a complex nose reflecting depth and authenticity. An elegant medium bodied wine with a sweet core of fruit combined with subtle savoury complexity of spice and herb that integrate into the subtle French oak which sits comfortably with the savoury notes and fine-grained tannins. Length and depth of fruit profile in the wine will ensure very good aging.

Vineyard Notes
Fruit for this wine was sourced from three different locations in the Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate. The vineyard is planted on undulating northern and eastern facing slopes and has duplex soils of ironstone gravel and loam over a clay sub soil. The Isolation Ridge Vineyard is managed under organic certification (ACO certified organic since 2009), a sustainable practice that maximises the unique characteristics of the Isolation Ridge Vineyard to be expressed in this wine.
Winemaker Notes
This wine was fermented in shallow open pot fermenters. Whole berries are going to open fermenter. Fermentation is initiated straight away, hand plunging is conducted to keep the ferment even and as gentle as possible, minimising extraction. A small parcel is fermented as 100% whole bunch and blended back to the wine post barrel maturation (7%). Temperatures typically do not exceed 26C through the 10 – 15 day ferment. Some additional maturation on skins occurs until tannin integration and balance is seen. This wine was aged for 15 months in 3,500 litre French oak foudre. The small addition of viognier along with the use of 2 clones of Syrah add to the wine’s complexity.
Other Notes
Certified Organic, Vegan Friendly, Shiraz 96%. Viognier 4%

“Lovely sweetly aromatic nose of black cherries with some pepper and mint. The palate has lovely silky texture with some iodine, blood and meat, combining ripe berry fruits with mint, ginger and pepper. It’s a very supple, fresh, elegant expression of shiraz that has some sweet fruit, but also good precision and focus, and a savoury dimension. Quite serious, but also quite drinkable..” 93 pts

“Simple gorgeous purity. Wafting strawberry aromatics mingled with a little vanilla spice. The palate is ripe and supple, firmly in the red fruit domain, with homemade strawberry jam and poached cherry flavours. Open, soft and agreeable.”

“Deep crimson. Highly perfumed – with rich fruit and a light floral quality. Very intense and deeply fruited on the palate but the fruit is not overly sweet (that’s good). Darker and more savoury on the palate, with a touch of black olive already. Spice and pepper from oak and fruit. Chewy and fresh on the long, tangy finish.” 17/20 pts

“Frankland Estate rightly comes to mind for riesling wines, but their shiraz has always been excellent. This 2014 release reminds us that medium-bodied, red-fruity, spicy, peppery shiraz is excellent under their care. It’s tight and long in flavour, complex, unfurling beautifully in a glass with air time. Super release.” 94 pts

“The sheer power of red and black cherry fruit, spice, bramble, earth, tannins, oak and a twinkle of acidity all demand your attention. Paradoxically, no one player captures the loud applause the wine generates.”

“These now mature vines are turning out exceptional fruit from this single vineyard. This is another shiraz that captures the essence of the region. It’s more medium bodied with a mix of gravelly, subtle dusty earth characters complementing the sweet seductive fruit. There’s a subtle ironstone character that emerges. It’s a wine with a distinct vineyard character.” 96 pts

"A complex bouquet of Christmas spices, roasted meat and plummy fruit emerges on the nose of the 2014 Isolation Ridge Shiraz. A perennial favorite, this vintage seems especially aromatic, then delivers layers of flavor on the supple, medium to full-bodied palate. It seems lighter and more elegant than past vintages without having lost intensity or complexity along the way. It should continue to drink well for at least a decade." 93 pts

"This wine, from Frankland Estate's renowned Isolation Ridge, is a wonderful example of the greatness that cool-climate Great Southern Shiraz can achieve. Medium bodied and elegant, this enchanting shows red cherry, raspberry, florals, cracked pepper and herbs, with an orange peel tang and a hint of meat and earth in the background. The palate is full of crunchy red fruit, florals and dusty, fine-grained tannins that lead to a long, pepper finish. Drink now-2027." 93 pts

"This excellent shiraz continues to be refined in the pursuit of a distinctly individual elegance and stylishness. This really gets it right, with a beautiful fleshy texture, gentle aromatics of plummy red fruits, with a light hint of cedar. Has a fine chalky tannin structure woven into the smooth slightly medium-bodied palate. There's a slightly spicy minerality on the finish which completes an excellent wine." 94 pts

"Very deep red colour with purple tints. The bouquet is big and robust, with adundant spices, a hint of vegetal character, too, and a big, ripe, full-throttle palate. Soft tannins. A good 'each-way' wine: cellar or drink young." 92 pts

"It's both solid and elegant. It sounds like a contradiction in terms but it somehow pulls it off. It's a meaty, graphite-infused red with peppercorn and black cherry flavours swooshing through. There's a clip of smoky oak too. Not a hair out of place. Quite lovely." 92+ pts

"This will morph into something rather special - it's too youthful now but already it has the hallmarks of a finely tuned, expressive Frankland River shiraz. Heady aromatics of florals, dark fruit, licorice, pepper and wood spices with chiselled tannins and clearly defined oak. Some creaminess on the palate adds another layer of complexity."

"I thought it would be hard to top the superb 2014 vintage but this does just that: exquisitely precise amalgam of peppery spice and ripe black fruit and undergrowthy complexity, beautifully balanced, slinky but firm tannins. Fabulous."

"Deep and intense savoury chocolate notes on the nose open this excellent Frankland shiraz. There's a real sense of vineyard here with those gravelly loam-like characters. The palate is beautifully poised with fine chalky tannins ad neatly applied oak in support. Dry savoury finish." 92 pts

"I love the exuberant red fruit here that runs in the dried-raspberry and redcurrant direction. But this also offers a considerable amount of dried meat. Generous and juicy, yet firm with steely tannins. Drink now." 93pt

"Brighter and fresher, with excellent red berry fruit characters and a touch of satsuma plum. The oak adds depth and texture, and also contributes to the spiciness that characterises the palate. Drying tannins close down the finish, ensuring ageability."18.6/20pts

Oooh la de da. It’s now a Syrah. Warning: contains Viognier (4%), some whole bunch (7%) and 15 months maturation on lees in 3,500 litre foudre. Drink 2021 - 2030+

Medium-weight in the glass, pale-purple colour with red edges. Loads of spice to the nose: white pepper, aniseed, cinnamon and blackberries. It's soft and spicy when sipped - though serious and sinewed at the same time. Purple berries and black cherries, a spine of dried herbs to match its finely-grained tannins. Delicious

Lovely lifted aromas, does have that floral and stonefruit touch. Also, chocolate and blackberries, spices, dry herbs. A delicious style of mid-length. If one had a criticism, it would be that the intensity does fade a little on the finish, but the positives far outweigh any detractions. Fine, slightly minerally tannins, this is a wine with a future...

Oh boy, when you get a good year down in the Great Southern, it really does show in the wines. This one is a real breakthrough for Frankland Estate. The wines over the years have been consistently very good, but this one is in another zone. It’s medium bodied and so exquisitely elegant. Spicy plum notes and grainy, minerally tannins running deep. Texture with a fine deft touch. Outstanding. 96 pts
