Frankland Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Organically grown and made, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Wafts of dark chocolate, cedar and dried Italian mixed herbs are complemented by lifted red currants and mulberry. The palate is opulent yet focused. Ripe fruit abounds, balanced by mouth coating chalky tannin, which gives the wine texture and length. Ripe mulberry flavours intertwine with cacao and tobacco leaf. 2017 was an ideal vintage for Cabernet Sauvignon with a very long, slow ripening period which allowed for a long hang time. A wet spring provided good early vine growth followed by a cooler than average January and February. The summer cooled considerably in early March slowing ripening with the Cabernet harvest on 3rd May. Fruit was harvested in clean and ideal conditions.
Wine Show of WA 2019 - BRONZE
Fruit for this wine was sourced from mature vines in the Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate. The vineyard sits on an undulating northern and eastern facing slope on ancient duplex soils of gravel and loam over a clay sub-soil. It is farmed using organic viticultural practices and this is reflected in the depth and concentration of fruit flavours. The vines are trained on a Scott Henry trellis system to enhance sunlight penetration of the canopy and optimize ripening conditions.
This wine was fermented as long and slowly as possible, at temperatures not exceeding 26°C in open pot fermentation tanks that allowed the cap to be worked by plunging and an extended maceration period allowed optimal colour, flavour and tannin extraction. It was aged in 500 litre French oak puncheons, this contributing textural complexity without compromising the opulent natural fruit flavours of the wine.

95/100 Single vineyard cabernet sauvignon from the Frankland River region. In very fine form. Yes. This is a wine to buy and drink. The price is more than reasonable, given the quality. It tastes of blackcurrant, lead pencil, tobacco and dark chocolate, the flavours flowing purposefully through to a fine, intricate finish. Medium-bodied in the best possible way. For now or later; it just works.

94/100 Most impressive cabernet from the Frankland Estate vineyards. It shows a distinctive regional and vineyard character, with a graphite-like iron-filings character threading through the seamless, structured palate. Elegant and stylish. Beautiful wine. July 2016

92/100 Blackcurranct, black olive, vanilla, gum leaf and dried herb perfume. Medium bodied, pure blackcurrant, light grainy tannin, cool acidity, and a slick of tannin on the finish. Good bone structure here, and a nice expression of Great Southern Cabernet. March 2017

96/100 Very good colour; this lines up very much hand in hand with the 14 shiraz, like an exercise in varietal purity and attention to detail in both vineyard and winery. Blackcurrant fruit with notes of dried herbs and a hint of earth is supported by first class cabernet tannins and a measured touch of French oak. Exceptional value. 2018

The bouquet is herbal and scented, with floral nuances, a hint of gunpowder, and the palate is slightly uneven and calls for a little cellaring time. Deep, rich and savoury. It’s all dark chocolate, blackberry and blackcurrant, dried herbs and cigar box. Thick earthy tannin, intensity of flavour, sweet dark berries and bitter chocolate, fine length and a slick of silty tannin on exit. Powerful.

A distintive minerally cabernet sauvignon that has a strong varietal and vineyard character from this excellent Frankland producer. Deep and concentrated with power and poise. Love that minerally finish with a beautifully leafy lift.

Shellac, currant, star anise and roast meats. Some loganberry. Dark, violet, and—seemingly—older wood Stilton skin complexity. And so it tastes, with sharp forest berries, black and red currants, in a powerful matrix of super-firm, wet carbon paper tannins. There's a concentrated runnel of coulis berries which builds and fills out at the back-palate, before mouth-aromas become wholemeal crusty.
