Vineyard Notes
Fruit for this wine was sourced from mature vines in the Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate. The vineyard sits on an undulating northern and eastern facing slope on ancient duplex soils of gravel and loam over a clay sub-soil. It is farmed using organic viticultural practices and this is reflected in the depth and concentration of fruit flavours. The vines are trained on a Scott Henry trellis system to enhance sunlight penetration of the canopy and optimize ripening conditions.
Winemaker Notes
This wine was fermented as long and slowly as possible, at temperatures not exceeding 26°C in open pot fermentation tanks that allowed the cap to be worked by plunging and an extended maceration period allowed optimal colour, flavour and tannin extraction. It was aged in 500 litre French oak puncheons, this contributing textural complexity without compromising the opulent natural fruit flavours of the wine.

95/100 Single vineyard cabernet sauvignon from the Frankland River region. In very fine form. Yes. This is a wine to buy and drink. The price is more than reasonable, given the quality. It tastes of blackcurrant, lead pencil, tobacco and dark chocolate, the flavours flowing purposefully through to a fine, intricate finish. Medium-bodied in the best possible way. For now or later; it just works.

94/100 Most impressive cabernet from the Frankland Estate vineyards. It shows a distinctive regional and vineyard character, with a graphite-like iron-filings character threading through the seamless, structured palate. Elegant and stylish. Beautiful wine. July 2016

92/100 Blackcurranct, black olive, vanilla, gum leaf and dried herb perfume. Medium bodied, pure blackcurrant, light grainy tannin, cool acidity, and a slick of tannin on the finish. Good bone structure here, and a nice expression of Great Southern Cabernet. March 2017

96/100 Very good colour; this lines up very much hand in hand with the 14 shiraz, like an exercise in varietal purity and attention to detail in both vineyard and winery. Blackcurrant fruit with notes of dried herbs and a hint of earth is supported by first class cabernet tannins and a measured touch of French oak. Exceptional value. 2018

95/100 A delicious wine in every respect, its bright colour, its scented persistent cassis bouquet, its fresh, juicy palate and its fine tannins. Each component plays a lead role somewhere along the way, all adding up to a cabernet made for drinking, or sipping - your call. March 2018

95/100 95% cabernet sauvignon, 5% malbec from the organically grown Isolation Ridge Vineyard, a long, slow open ferment with hand-plunging, matured in French puncheons. Purity and power stay within a medium-bodied frame because everything is ergonomically measured and delivered - blackcurrant, tapenade and dried herbs/leaves. 2019

91/100 Medium to full red colour with a tinge of purple. The bouquet is herbal and scented, with floral nuances, a hint of gunpowder, and the palate is slightly uneven and calls for a little cellaring time. It's straightforward and tasty and appropriately priced. The cassis flavours are juicy and long. Plenty to like here. 06 MAR 2019

"Spicy and gravelly loan-like characters which seem to be a direct link into the soils of the special vineyard. Excellent blackcurrant and ripe, plummy chocolatey fruit with a fine tannin and understated oak combination."92pts July 2019

"A medium to full-bodied cabernet that speaks equally clearly of its place and its varietal birthright, which I believe to be the estate's Isolation Ridge Vineyard (the back label is silent on this matter). Blackcurrant is the dominant flavour, assisted by notes of black olive and bay leaf, the tannins firm but ripe, the oak merely a vehicle." 95pts

Deep, rich and savoury. It’s all dark chocolate, blackberry and blackcurrant, dried herbs and cigar box. Thick earthy tannin, intensity of flavour, sweet dark berries and bitter chocolate, fine length and a slick of silty tannin on exit. Powerful.

A distintive minerally cabernet sauvignon that has a strong varietal and vineyard character from this excellent Frankland producer. Deep and concentrated with power and poise. Love that minerally finish with a beautifully leafy lift.

A glossy ruby verging on opaque. Inviting. The set of estate wines-for lack of a better expression-is superb. It sets one up for the higher tier of the range, while consolidating the address as a source of eminently enjoyable wines. Artisanal, honest and for those seeking wines of place, affordable. Black currant. Sage. Tapenade. Mulch. A potpourri of herb and graphite. Frankland Petit Châteaux.

Shellac, currant, star anise and roast meats. Some loganberry. Dark, violet, and—seemingly—older wood Stilton skin complexity. And so it tastes, with sharp forest berries, black and red currants, in a powerful matrix of super-firm, wet carbon paper tannins. There's a concentrated runnel of coulis berries which builds and fills out at the back-palate, before mouth-aromas become wholemeal crusty. There’s both rusticity and polish to this. 94(95)/100 (h), 8/10

Heaps of familiar cabernet character from start to finish, delivered in power-on mode. All those red/blackberried aromas, with leaf and old-fashioned pencil-case senses, with a surge of mouth-filling tannins to cap it all off. 92pts

Blackcurrants, plums, black cherries and liquorice, this is a tangy and delicious Cabernet that will be a cracking match with a Sunday roast, spag bol and many other dishes. Open tank-fermented with a bit of time in 500-litre puncheons, there’s a real sense of fun to the three Frankland Estate wines that I’ve tried. A cheery celebration of some good fruit, well-structured tannins and fresh acidity, these are great for close friends, good friends and gossip. This isn’t a sacrificial wine that you take and don’t mind if it gets lost at a party, pick your friends that also love a decent wine with a bit of complexity and get amongst it

Aromas of mulberries, dried herbs, earth and cloves. Medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins and fresh acidity. Juicy and fleshy, with a creamy texture and spicy character at the finish. Drink or hold. From organically grown grapes. Screw cap. 92 points

Another Frankland wine with an indelible vineyard and regional thumbprint. The distinctive characters of the ironstone soils of the vineyards emerge through the fruit in what is an excellent cabernet. It’s mostly cabernet with tiny amounts of cab franc and malbec bringing a juicy vibrancy into the blend. The larger format oak allows the distinctive characters of the fruit to fully express themselves. A vibrant, high energy wine. 95 pts

I am still coming to grips with the tannins in 2020 in Frankland River. They are prodigious. It's not all bad, it's just a repetitive observation when I taste the wines, and I am still deciding how I feel about it. In the case of this 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, the tannins serve to shape the dark red fruit and spice in the mouth, and they open up through the finish to reveal the inimitable red gravel, blood, ferrous and iodine that come so easily to the reds in Frankland River. It is an astoundingly beautiful landscape... vast, and there is something fiercely statuesque about it—both attributes come through in the wines. If Frankland Cabernet is not already on your radar in Western Australia, it should be. 92 pts
