Tasting Notes
Complex fruit profile of nectarine, spice, subtle almond and light toasty nuances layered with yellow florals of calendula and marjoram. Soft and rounded with a gentle textural influence leading to an elegant and focused palate. 100% organically grown chardonnay from the Isolation Ridge vineyard. Textural and creamy with delicacy up front which carries through the length of the palate and is balanced by a mouth-watering playful acidity. Lemon/mandarin and nectarines give some beautiful fruit sweetness and weight to the mid palate A light touch of new oak lends the wine a lovely length and focus which is elegant and gentle in equal measure. There is a complex textured component which plays beautifully with the acid to deliver a refined chardonnay offering.
Vineyard Notes
Organically grown fruit for this wine was sourced from three different locations in our Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate. The vineyard is planted on undulating northern and eastern facing slopes and has duplex soils of ironstone gravel and loam over a clay sub soil. The vines are all from the low yielding (Mendoza) clone renowned for its “hen and chicken’ combination of large and small berries in the same bunch. This results in highly concentrated fruit flavours. The vine canopy is trained on a combination of vertical shoot and Scott Henry trellis to allow increased air circulation.
Winemaker Notes
The fruit is lightly pressed into stainless steel tanks and allowed to settle for 24 hours. The juice is then racked off its heavy lees to 500 litre French puncheons (25% new oak) for wild yeast fermentation. Some barrel stirring through fermentation and post fermentation occurs resulting in a wine with complexity and individuality. The wine was transferred out of barrel after 10 months on lees before being bottled.

“Bright, light yellow colour with a lightly toasty cashew nut and grapefruit bouquet, fresh youthful and vibrant, the palate likewise brisk and fresh, crisp and tangy with firmness and tension. "Bright, medium coloured with restrained, subtle but fresh creamy lees, cashew nut and lemon/citrus fruit flavours. It's fresh and bright, nervy and quite intense, with lovely clarity and balance. "Citrussy. Tip-and-run style with pear/citrus/white peach fruit bursting out of the blocks and running fast through the palate. Drinking it is like racing through the rapids. It's refreshing but it has a bit of style too. Lots of length. Drinks well now but it should have a future." 91+ pts

"Gets off to a good start with a lovely glowing green-gold colour in the glass. A complex but understated style which will continue to build in the bottle no doubt. Fruit characters are mainly in the citrus vein with some spice and savoury input from the oak seamlessly meshed. Fine and long on the palate with a slinkiness of texture held in a taut, convincing framework." 94 pts

90/100 Light yellow colour with a spicy, smoky reduction bouquet, which is quite complex and inviting. Its mid-palate is fine and restrained but loaded with grapefruit flavours, the palate refined and taut, long and crisp, with lively energy and a clean, crisp and dry follow-through. Always a pillowy, bumptious chardonnay hewn of a gentle chord of tension, usurped by the sheer generosity of stone fruit, toasted hazelnut and creamy nougat-cashew core. There is nothing fat about this, but the softer seams avail an earlier drinking window than most. All the better for it.

Chardonnay from the Frankland River region. It’s a taut, tense chardonnay. It’s likely to be a better drink in maybe 12 months from now. It tastes of custard apple and flint, pear and white peach, citrus and smoke. It feels dry, almost steely. The finish is so taut that it never really stands a chance, or not right now anyway. Like the overall style of this; juicy and flavoursome but dry and direct. 90+ Pts

Light to mid, bright yellow hue. The bouquet has grapefruit, passionfruit and fresh garden herb aromas. Clean, fresh and vibrant. Good intensity and refinement; direct, incisive flavours, with decent persistence. Fruit drives the wine, ably assisted by lively acidity. A fine wine.

Treat from the west Frankland Estate is one of the leading producers in the remote Great Southern region of Western Australia; with fruit grown on a sheep farming property. The brand is probably best known for its stellar dry rieslings, but this chardonnay is very much in the zone with fruit and subtle oak in complete harmony. Still very youthful, this would pair brilliantly with an old-fashioned roast pork and crackling. Certified organic and vegan friendly.

Aromas of ripe peach and melon abound here with some lemon and pastry. The palate is more citrus-driven ,with a fine mineral thread that cuts the finish with clarity. Drink now. Screw cap. 91 points

If you like your Chardonnay a little riper, this is a squishy, fruity, organic joy that will make you smile. Warm and juicy apricots, peaches, vanilla, shortbread, tangy baked apples and a hint of sweet spice all combine into an easy-drinking and moreish wine. Get some roast pork and stuffing going on and don’t skimp on the crackling, it’ll be a perfect match and feel all indulgent and rich. This is one for the 3-5 year maturation span whilst it is all juicy and vibrant. 92 points

It’s zippy through the palate and yet there’s plenty of flavour there. Peach, fleshy and ripe, with popcorn and cedar wood as boosters. There’s a flintiness to the finish, a crackle of spice too. There are no great highs or lows but what it does, it does well. 91 pts

Interestingly, while Frankland’s approach to riesling has been influenced by its approach to chardonnay, particularly wild yeasts, its approach to chardonnay has likewise been influenced by riesling, especially in the use of larger older format oak. The wine remains on lees after fermentation for 9 months. This is a very good example of how far chardonnay has come here. It’s vibrant and expressive with a chalky minerally character threading through the primary fruits. Long with a beautiful texture 95 pts
