Winemaker Notes
This wine was fermented as long and slowly as possible, at temperatures not exceeding 28C in open fermentation tanks that allowed the cap to be worked by gentle plunging. An extended maceration period followed completion of the ferment to allow optimal texture and flavour extraction. It was aged for 14 months in 500 litre French oak puncheons and stainless steel tanks.

“Bright, full crimson-purple; the variety and the terroir seek to impose each one’s stamp over the other, both failing in their attempt, the perfect win-win outcome. Blackberry fruit, spice and black pepper lead the way on the bouquet and medium-bodied palate alike, French oak (subtle) and tannins (ripe, but fine) completing a great portrait of cool-grown shiraz.”

“I love the vivid, meaty black cherry and blackberry fruit here. Sweet but very fresh with good acidity, and a peppery, detailed edge. There’s a slight leafy edge and nice grip. Deliciously focused, this is a very stylish cool-climate expression of shiraz.” 92 pts

“Light, spicy and fragrant. Crushed green peppercorns, red rose petals and raspberries. The palate is red fruited and concentrated, though is packaged into a medium-bodied palate. Beautiful energy and expression. Youthful and bright. Lovely.”

“deep cherry red. Fine dusty/mineral quality to the dark fruit and black pepper spice. More red-fruited on the palate with both fruit and oak sweetness. Refined tannin texture with just a slight chew at this youthful moment, and a juicy, moreish finish. Well balanced enough for several years’ beneficial ageing, or drink it now on the lively fruit.” 16/20 pts

"Made in a fruit-forward style, the 2015 Shiraz offers intense aromas of violets and black cherries with just a modicum of spice. It's medium to full-bodied, with hints of leather chiming in on the palate to give the wine a savory edge on the silky-textured finish. Drink it over the next few years." 89 pts

"Shiraz from the cool climes of the Great Southern region of Western Australia is a far cry from their rich, sunshine-infused South Aussie counterparts. Frankland Estate is one of the leaders of this more restrained, medium-bodied style. Their estate Shiraz is bursting with ripe blue fruit, vanilla, smoky cedar and baking spices. The palate is silky and elegant, with juicy fruit and savory tannins." 92 pts

"Wonderful Shiraz, in an elegant style - and a terrific value. It is aromatic and complex; a wine with intense fruitness and light oakiness (boysenberry, red currant, plum, cooked meat, min, violet, pepper, spicy oak), excellent balance and a long finish. Great value. 90% Shiraz, 5% Malbec, 3% Marsanne, 2% Viognier, from the certified organic Isolation RIdge vineyard. Aged 18 months in French oak puncheons."

"Retains its good colour; the bouquet and palate alike have started to develop the complex spicy, savoury forest floor characters that are the mark of topflight pinot noir. The length of the palate is of itself a measure of the quality of this wine, and the great vintage promises even more down the track."95pts

Medium to deep red colour with a good tinge of purple. The bouquet is spicy, earthy, savoury and far from simple although fruit-driven. Peppery elements too. It's medium-bodied and savoury, with firm drying tannins and some ironstone, minerally notes. It's very approachable already.

A superb estate release, drinking like a savoury highly aromatic paean to a luncheon quaffer from the northern Rhone. Think Crozes-Hermitage or a more heightened tier, Saint Joseph. Olive, charcuterie, iodine, blueberry and a long peppery skein of jitterbug freshness. A great drink now and across the mid-term. On point.

Lovely shiraz, bit of a treat. Graphite, clove, dark chocolate and ripe black cherry. Both dry and generous at once. Sweet-fruited and savoury. Nuanced. Flows effortlessly but there’s tannin here too. Medium-weight in a good way. All those things. 93 pts

Fresh aromas of red fruits, pepper and mixed spices, fragrant and stylish, the palate elegantly weighted and proportioned, with firm tannins bringing up the rear. Very approachable already

Bright crimson. Very clean and peppery with sweet fruit but real energy. Like the entry-level Riesling, this is a star! So obviously Syrah (rather than Shiraz) and really fresh and refreshing without being tart. Probably not for the long term but really delicious now. Quite long!

Open-fermented, extended maceration, 14 months maturation in French puncheons. The deep purple colour sets the scene for a powerful, fragrant wine with poached spiced plum and ripe tannins, the French oak beating a delicate tattoo on the finish. 14.5% alc, screwcap 95 points, drink to 2033

What a statement of Frankland River shiraz. This is quintessential shiraz style that these and others in the region are seeking. Beautifully weighted with a mix of gravelly loamy fruit displaying such brightness and energy. In fact, that’s the feature I like about this. The chalk iron stone says place to me. 95 points

Really youthful, purple and vibrant in the glass. Lifted aromatics of white pepper, spice, black cherry, smoked-meats and soy. Deliciously vibrant mid-weighted flavours of fleshy blueberries, spice and licorice all teamed with some firm, purposeful tannins and an acid drive that ensure structure and a vividness of cooler-climate fruit 2021–2036 93 points

This is a shiraz of genuine appeal. The mid palate is sweet and ripe but there’s a lot flying about the edges. Redcurrant and raspberry meets graphite, black pepper, clove and woodsmoke. It’s soft and accessible in general but the finish is curled with just-enough tannin to give it shape and class. Very nice. Very good. It’s moreish at heart but there’s, err, more to it than that, 92 points
