Gruner Veltliner 2021

Gruner Veltliner 2021

It's a style of wine that was all the rage in the wine bars in New York, known as "Groovy" by the trendy crowd. There's not a lot of Grüner Veltliner planted in Australia, but where this native Austrian white varietal is small in numbers, it's big in flavour impact!

Tasting Notes
A lovely combination of spice and dried pear with slight citrus notes. Stone fruit dried summer grass and earthy tones are supported by delicate florals and a juicy fruitfulness. The palate is delicate but fleshed out with some textural generosity almost touching on phenolic texture giving weight and tension to this generous and luscious wine. The spice and floral mix are undeniably Grüner Veltliner. Fresh bright and delicious, this wine will age nicely and gain complexity. Organically grown, vinified and estate bottled.
Vineyard Notes
The Grüner Veltliner is grown in the Isolation Ridge Vineyard at Frankland Estate off seven short rows of vines grafted as a trial in 2017. The vineyard is planted on undulating eastern facing slopes and has duplex soils of ironstone gravel and loam over a clay sub soil. The vineyard is managed under certified organic principles, a practice we feel important for reflecting terroir driven wines.

The Riesling experts at Frankland Estate’s take on Grüner but in very limited quantities (one barrel, in this case). A hedonistic version as a result of barrel fermentation: charcuterie and cruciferous vegetable notes with herbs, citrus, blossom and graphite. Quietly mind-blowing.

Interesting wine this, and kind of hard to describe. Quite spicy, almost a cabbage thing happening, along with ripe lemon and apple. Its savoury in a sort of lactic-fermenty-sauerkraut way, but also has fresh and spicy lemon barley and pear flavour, with a fine dusty texture and good length. Acidity is balanced and coll, but there's richness too. Very interesting. Hard wine to rate, because it's likely to polarize. On balance, I like it. 91 points

I do like this variety and delighted to see the increase – albeit off a very low base –  of plantings. This one is just beautiful with floral musk-like aromas with an edgy minerally spiciness. The palate is textural, and fruit driven with a chalky minerality balancing 93 pts

Austere, steely and yet plump through the finish, the 2021 Organic is savory and lean with green nashi pear, white soap, lavender and white spice. With acidity that is typical to Frankland River (coiled, firm, pronounced), this is on the lean end of the spectrum for the variety—although the fruit is very ripe—but with all the orange blossom fatness through the finish. 90 pts
