Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Complex and perfumed on the nose it has alluring citrus pith, zesty orange, lime and cumquat, which unfolds with the delicate flavours of spice and ironstone mineral undertones. There is a real softness and generosity of fruit on the front and mid palate. The evident fruit weight is kept in check with rounded yet apparent acidity giving the wine direction, tightness and length. A fusion between fruit intensity, ironstone flintiness and saline mineral acidity is complemented by an overlying silky-texture. The wine is balanced by a fragile delicacy and lightness of touch that persists through the long refreshing finish of this distinguished riesling. Consistent with the now well-established Isolation Ridge style this wine reflects both the low-yielding, dry growing conditions of this site. The balance of pristine fruit flavours and defining acidity result in an exceptional wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared with the confidence as it will continue to develop further complexity for many years to come.
Vineyard Notes
This wine was made from 100% Riesling grown in the Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate. Riesling vines from two different clones were planted in 1988 on undulating northern and eastern facing slopes with duplex soils of ironstone gravel over a clay sub-soil. A number of trellis systems are used through the vineyard. The vineyard is situated 256 meters above sea level. The cool nights and long slow ripening periods typical of the Frankland River region allow maximum flavour development while maintaining the distinctive vibrant acidity for which Rieslings from this region are renowned. The vineyard is farmed according to certified organic principles and this is reflected in the clarity and complexity of the pristine fruit from the vineyard.
Winemaker Notes
Grapes are pressed immediately on arrival at the winery with the juice left to settle in tank over night before being racked to fermentation vessel. The wine is fermented in stainless tanks at low temperatures (less than 15°C) over 8 weeks with minimal intervention from our winemakers in order to obtain the purest expression of the pristine, organically grown fruit from the Isolation Ridge vineyard. The wine is then left on its lees for six months. A small parcel of riesling was fermented and aged in (neutral) oak for 10 months where it attains lovely complex textural components and enhances the opulence of the wine.

“All the hallmarks of this site are at play with camomile and blossom, the lightness of touch on the palate with its citrus notes, some concentration and texture yet the steely freshness and acidity so pure it creates an ultra-fine and long finish.”

“Bright, clean and vibrant with a citrus-focused palate. Nuances of white flowers and talc. It does not have quite the focus and line as in other years. Instead, it is more gentle and welcoming and very approachable in its youth. That said, it is a very lovely wine with great purity and freshness. Refreshing and satisfying.” 92 pts

“Another thrilling example of Frankland’s great Riesling from this outstanding vineyard. Crunchy vibrant and so lively. Dances across the tongue with lemon zest and a lift of wet, slaty minerality. Very long and clean in the mouth. Great drinking now but with plenty of cellaring potential.” 95 pts

"The 2016 Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Riesling is at its scintillating, tense best. The single-vineyard offering from 2016 is a pure, driven white of citrus and green apple perfume and flavours. It's a long, fine and energetic riesling. There's argument that the wine might not cellar as long as previous releases, a touch of extra juiciness appears here, but you'll be fine for the medium term."

"One of the finest vineyards in the state is the source of this exceptional riesling. Frankland Estate remains one of the leading exponents of this variety and this is a super slick example of what they are doing. Minerally with traces of lemon and a sprinkle of bath salts. The almost gentle acid sustains the long palate. Will handle further bottle ageing. Cellar 8 years." 94 pts
