Frankland Estate

Isolation Ridge Vineyard Shiraz 2006 Magnum

Isolation Ridge Vineyard Shiraz 2006 Magnum

Tim White, Australian Financial Review, March 2009 Satsuma plum-smelling and peppery; plus other mace-like spiciness.  Attacks really peppery and builds dry, brick, dusty tannins.  There’s those plums again as well as dried citrus peel and sweet-savoury prosciutto-like flavours.  The best Frankland Estate red I’ve tasted in ages. 94pts

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
With average vine age now over 18 years and the soft cool ripening conditions of the 2006 vintage, we believe this to be one of Frankland Estate’s most structured and elegant Shiraz wines, to date. This wine shows all the characteristics of a well made cool climate Shiraz through white pepper and spice characters and a core of generous fruit. Structured to cellar for at least 15 years, but enjoy now.
Vineyard Notes
Fruit for this wine was hand picked from the Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate. The vineyard is planted on northern and eastern facing slopes and has duplex soils of gravel and loam over clay sub-soil. The Shiraz vines are trained on either Scott Henry, Vertical Shoot or Geneva Double Curtain trellis systems. Each of these three systems produces different fruit flavours providing balance and complexity to the wine. The vines are trimmed to enhance sunlight penetration of the canopy from early in the season. Leaf removal around the bunches just before veraison, further improved airflow and light penetration and enhanced flavour development. Vines are dry grown.
Winemaker Notes
The juice was fermented as slowly as possible with temperatures kept under 30°C. Open fermentation tanks were used to facilitate working the cap which was plunged and/or pumped over gently according to the condition of fruit and stage of ferment. When the ferment was complete wine was given an extended maceration period to maximise colour, tannin and flavour extraction. The wine was aged for two years in French oak (500 litre) puncheons of which 30% were new. Regular racking allowed minimal filtration prior to bottling.
