Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
The Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate is now farmed using organic viticultural practices resulting in greater depth and concentration to our wines. The vineyard sits on an undulating northern and eastern facing slope on ancient duplex soils of gravel and loam over a clay sub-soil. Fruit for this wine was sourced from Geisenheim clone Riesling vines planted in 1988. This clone is renowned for retaining high levels of acidity throughout the vintage, this providing a natural counterbalance to the residual sweetness in this wine.
Winemaker Notes
Handpicked when ripe in the early morning and whole-bunch pressed for fermentation in 1000 litre French oak ‘foudre’ over 4 weeks. Towards the end of fermentation, when the ideal balance of sugar, fruit weight and acidity had been achieved, the wine was chilled to arrest fermentation.

“Has well and truly established itself in the wine community; the finish is a magical blend of flint and fruit, the residual sugar perfectly balanced by titratable acidity; great length.” 96 pts

“A very highly regarded off-dry riesling, this year more in the Rheingau style than that of the Mosel Valley, the amount of residual sugar largely shaded by the acidity; that said, both the length and balance are very good, and it would be a sacrilege to drink any more than a bottle until 3 or 4 years down the track, and preferably far longer than that. The points are for the wine as it is today, not as it will be once it has learned to walk.” 95 pts

"Light, yellow colour, bright and fresh, the aroma very fresh and intense with lifted aromatics, which are more akin to a German than an Australian riesling. The wine is bright and fresh, crisp and intense, with a subtly off-dry balance. It's like a halbtrocken. Very fine, restrained, fresh and tense on the palate, with great potential. A superb wine, but it will be even better if cellared a few years." 96 pts

"Fragrant and appealing ripe guava citrus aromas, white pepper underneath. Off-dry palate, quince, lime, frangipani and lime match the zingy acidity, tropical mango and lingering finish." 95 pts - Awarded Gold

"It's delicious for starters. It's intense with lime and orange oil-like flavour and it boasts an excellent start, a good middle and a terrific finish. It begs you to come back for more but it drives long through the finish too; it's quality all the way. Sweet-edged but thrilling. Quite beautiful." 93 pts

"Made in an off-dry style, and inevitably compared with its counterparts from the Mosel and Rheingau. Risking repetition, it is one of the few Australian rieslings that combines the intense, nervy minerality of these wines with pure and delightful varietal character, a testament to the region, vineyard and winemaker. A masterclass in poise and balance." 96 pts

"This is excitingly youthful. Yet, it has a very complex array of spices, white peaches, citrus and stony minerally accents. The palate is very powerful, and the fruit ripeness is right on. There is a strong and tart grapefruit-like thread that holds the long finish. Best from 2022." 96 pts

"At this early stage of its life, it would be easy to mis-read this wine as a fun, grapey, pleasantly off-dry riesling. But there's a backbone of scintillating, nervy acidity, too, that will see it build in complexity and flavour satisfaction as it ages."

This is the pinnacle of riesling wines from one of the great producers Of Australia. Hand-picked fruit is crushed and sent to 1,000l oak barrels where complexity and time on lees is inherent. The wine also holds an off-dry level of residual sugar, lending perfume, texture and a gentle sweetness. Brillant, crystal-cut texture and vivacious, citrusy acidity, with a come-hither lick of gentle ripe fruitiness. A masterful, complex wine that demands time to unfurl and will build in the cellar for decades.

Named after the founders, Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam. Off-dry and crafted from a plot-by-plot-by-row selection across the most propitious sites. Lemon squash, candied citrus zest, mountain herb and tonic. This serves as a transparent stream of uncluttered riesling scents, neither too dry and sour; nor excessively fruity and dainty. Make no mistake, despite its ethereal flow, this mid-weighted riesling packs punch across a long finish of sap and crunch, the dollop of sugar mitigating the grape's soprano acidity.

With striking clarity and purity, this is the sort of riesling you can get lost in, merely by breathing in the aromas of fresh sliced limes, white peaches and grapefruit, as well as nuances of white flowers, gun flint and spice. The palate has a similarly complete and composed style, leading you along with pristine lime, apple, white-peach and fresh-pear flavors. Long and effortless, this is all so pleasurable. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap. 96 pts

won top marks from Paterson, who told us, “Strong grapefruit and lemon-pith aromas. Great palate intensity and drive. There is a touch of attractive salinity and well-judged sweetness. Assertive preserved lemon flavours linger on the finish. I picked up an initial prickle of SO2, which didn’t get close to interrupting the intense aromas. There are hints of toast and pastry amongst the citrus flavours and the wine finishes with a little texture that balances its sweetness.” The hints of more savoury characters are well judged, as is the balance of sweetness and acidity. There’s great length, too. 93 pts

Really punchy and Germanic – as opposed to Western Australian. Yes it really is a Kabinett! (Acid and fruit balance is a tightrope triumph.) I'm not sure many people will be prepared to pay this price for an Australian Kabinett when they can find some pretty good ones from Germany for much less, but good for Frankland Estate for trying so hard to such good effect. Beautiful texture. 17 pts
