SmithCullam Syrah 2018

SmithCullam Syrah 2018

Gary Walsh, www.thewinefront.com.au, April 2020 The quality of tannin is what marks it out as a special wine. It’s all stone and graphite, a landslide of wonderful tannin, wrapped in succulent black fruit, perfume of jasmine and cracked black pepper. It’s cool and long, distinctly ‘mineral’ and firm to close. A new benchmark for this producer. Drink : 2022 - 2032+ 96pts

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
A brooding complexity of floral aromas and ferrous minerality giving the wine intent and seriousness. Tightly would acidity and tannin combine giving the wine a graphite/ferrous thread through the palate. A core of perfumed fruit and mid weighted style finish with a distinct earthy drive.

Vineyard Notes
Fruit for this wine was sourced from the original east west facing “Winery Block” planted on Isolation Ridge in 1988. The vineyard is planted on undulating northern and eastern facing slopes and has duplex soils of ironstone gravel and loam over a clay sub soil. The Isolation Ridge Vineyard is managed under organic certification (ACO certified organic since 2009), a sustainable practice that maximises the unique characteristics of the Isolation Ridge Vineyard to be expressed in this wine.
Winemaker Notes
This wine was fermented in small shallow open pot fermenters. Whole berries are used, and fermentation is initiated straight away, hand plunging is conducted to keep the ferment even and as gentle as possible, minimising extraction. Temperatures typically do not exceed 26C through the 10 – 15 day ferment. Some additional maturation on skins occurs until tannin integration and balance is seen. This wine was aged for 15 months in 3,500 litre French oak foudre. The small addition of viognier (5%) and Mourvèdre (1%) add to the wine’s complexity.
Other Notes
Certified Organic, Vegan Friendly, Shiraz 94%, Viognier 5%, Mourvèdre 1%

92/100 Opaque violet color. Sexy, highly perfumed bouquet of cassis, cherry-cola, smoked meat, incense, licorice and black cardamom. Chewy, tightly focused cherry and dark berry flavors are firmed by dusty tannins and pick up a strong spicy quality with air. A very young blend with strong finishing grip and a persistent note of cola on the close. This refuses to let go of the palate.

92/100 First produced in 2005, the 2007 Smith Cullam Shiraz Cabernet is 2/3 Shiraz, 1/3 Cabernet Sauvignon matured in 60% new French oak puncheons. Revealing a very deep garnet-purple colour, it has a slightly reduced nose with some rubber and tar notes over dried plums, game, cedar, chocolate, macerated blackberry, mushrooms, damp earth and pepper. Rich and full bodied in the mouth with medium-high acid and a medium to firm level of very fine grained tannins, it gives a very long finish. It will be best broached from 2012 to 2022+. 31/10/10

91/100 Love this wine. It’s plump and generous with immense power presented with effortless and stylish ease. Dark plum and blackcurrant aroma with spicy savoury nuances and delightful cedary oak. It has great structure presence on the palate. Deep and concentrated palate with many years ahead of it. 2010

Silver Award. There is a depth of fruit that is quite clenched contained in this wine. It has focus and precision with the generosity of shiraz and the tightness of cabernet. It is quenching, has thickness with surging black fruit and will continue to offer drinking for many years to come.

9.1/10 A wine so lovely upon opening that you will never taste at its best, perhaps in a couple of hours, because you can't wait. Feb 2010

Deep crimson-red colour with brighter edges. A bouquet of tension showing graphite and raspberry liqueuer, cool-climate pepper, bay leaf and sage. A beautiful wine on first sip - tightly-wound, unfurling at its own pace with rhubarb, mulberries and red-berry acidity driving through to a soft-tannined finish. Pristine fruit.

Notes of mulberries, plums, dark berries, florals and tobacco leaf. Complex and supple. This is so wonderfully silky, with tannins like cashmere. Oak is perfectly melded into the wine. Impressive length and here the intensity is maintained throughout. A glorious red. 96.

A wine of enormous concentration and flavour impact, yet it does this with a medium body. Ripe satsuma spicy plum characters and just a little licorice. It has a subtle gamey, meaty minerality in the palate with a deep succulent middle. Fine and so elegant. It's another groundbreaker from this vintage for Frankland Estate. 97 Pts
